Proportional Reasoning

Proportional reasoning is the mathematical understanding of how quantities relate to each other through ratios and proportions. It is essential for solving problems involving scaling, sharing, and unit conversions. This concept helps us analyze situations where quantities change in a consistent multiplicative manner.

Concept Explanation

When two quantities increase or decrease at the same rate, they are said to be in proportion. This means their ratio remains constant. For example, if the length and width of a rectangle increase by the same factor, the shapes remain similar.

Formula Derivation

Consider two ratios \( \frac{a}{b} \) and \( \frac{c}{d} \). They are proportional if:

\[ \frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d} \]

Cross-multiplying gives:

\[ a \times d = b \times c \]

This is the fundamental property of proportions used to solve for unknowns.

Worked Illustrations

Example: If \( \frac{3}{4} = \frac{x}{8} \), find \( x \).

Using cross multiplication:

\[ 3 \times 8 = 4 \times x \\ 24 = 4x \\ x = \frac{24}{4} = 6 \]

So, \( x = 6 \).

Solved Examples

Example 1: A recipe requires 2 cups of sugar for every 5 cups of flour. How much sugar is needed for 15 cups of flour?

Set up the proportion:

\[ \frac{2}{5} = \frac{x}{15} \]

Cross multiply:

\[ 2 \times 15 = 5 \times x \\ 30 = 5x \\ x = \frac{30}{5} = 6 \]

So, 6 cups of sugar are needed.

Practice Set

Level 1 – Easy

  • If \( \frac{5}{x} = \frac{15}{9} \), find \( x \).
  • Simplify the ratio 18:24.
  • Find the missing term: \( \frac{7}{14} = \frac{?}{28} \).

Level 2 – Moderate

  • A map scale shows 1 cm represents 5 km. How many kilometers does 12 cm represent?
  • Divide 72 in the ratio 3:5.
  • Convert 2 hours 30 minutes into minutes and express the ratio of hours to minutes.

Level 3 – Challenging

  • Two quantities are in the ratio 4:7. If their sum is 132, find the quantities.
  • A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio 5:3. How much water must be added to 40 liters of mixture to make the ratio 5:4?
  • Prove that if \( \frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d} \), then \( \frac{a+b}{b} = \frac{c+d}{d} \).

Answer Key

Level 1

  • \( x = 3 \)
  • Ratio simplified: 3:4
  • Missing term: 14

Level 2

  • 12 cm represents 60 km
  • Parts: 27 and 45
  • 2 hours 30 minutes = 150 minutes; ratio = 2:2.5 or 4:5

Level 3

  • Quantities: 48 and 84
  • Water to add: 8 liters
  • Proof:
    Given \( \frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d} \), cross multiply \( ad = bc \).
    Then,
    \[ \frac{a+b}{b} = \frac{a}{b} + \frac{b}{b} = \frac{a}{b} + 1 = \frac{c}{d} + 1 = \frac{c+d}{d} \]
