Krishnadeva Raya and His Court

  • The Vijayanagara Empire was renowned for its wealth, glory and cultural achievements.
  • Krishnadeva Raya ruled from 1509 to 1529 CE. His reign is known as the empire’s Golden Era, when art, literature and architecture flourished.
  • He was a wise and powerful monarch, a warrior, a poet and a patron of learning. His works include the epic *Amuktamalyada* and the Sanskrit drama *Jambavati Parinayam*.
  • The Ashtadiggajas were eight celebrated poets at his court. They included Allasani Peddana and Tenali Ramakrishna.
  • Tenali Ramakrishna was a poet and witty advisor, admired for his humour and clever solutions to difficult problems.

The Quarrel Between the King and Queen

  • A seemingly small misunderstanding caused a quarrel between Krishnadeva Raya and Queen Thirumalambal. The king stopped speaking to her and visiting her for weeks.
  • The king had written a poem filled with vague images of the sun, moon, stars and beautiful sky. When he recited it to his ministers, they avoided responding.
  • Later, the exhausted queen yawned several times while he recited the poem to her. The king mistook her yawning for disrespect and stormed off.
  • The queen was upset and tried to resolve the conflict, but could not. The king’s absence made the palace’s once-cheerful corridors feel quiet and forlorn.

Tenali Rama Agrees to Help

  • Queen Thirumalambal explained the incident to Tenali Rama, hoping he could help the king understand what had happened.
  • Tenali listened patiently and agreed to try to resolve the matter. He said it would require a well-planned approach and that he might need time to find the right strategy.
  • The queen thanked him, placing her last hope in his wit and judgement.
