Significance of Agriculture in India’s Economy

Agriculture stands as one of the most ancient and vital economic activities in India. The country ranks second globally in terms of agricultural production, reflecting the immense efforts of its farming community. Indian agriculture not only feeds the nation but also supports exports of crops, horticultural products, and processed foods to over 120 countries worldwide.

This sector remains the largest employer in India, engaging a significant portion of the workforce. However, it is predominantly labour-intensive and highly reliant on the monsoon rains, making farmers vulnerable to climatic uncertainties. Additionally, the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is widespread to maintain productivity.

While agriculture contributed approximately 17% to 18% of India’s GDP in 2018, this share has declined to around 14% by 2021, as industrial and service sectors have expanded. Despite this, nearly half of the workforce continues to depend on agriculture for their livelihood, with women constituting a substantial part of cultivators and agricultural labourers.

After third division (each grandchild divides 0.5 hectares among 4 children):

\[ \frac{0.5}{4} = 0.125 \text{ hectares per great-grandchild} \]

Thus, in the third generation, each landholding will be 0.125 hectares, which is very small for sustainable farming.

In contrast, commercial farming uses large tracts of land to produce cash crops such as tea, coffee, sugarcane, cotton, and jute.

Primitive subsistence farming persists in some regions, characterized by low productivity due to minimal use of modern inputs and reliance on family or community labour. This method is practiced on small land patches and is known by various local names across India.

Other farming styles include plantation agriculture, dryland farming, wetland farming, terrace farming, and extensive farming, each adapted to specific environmental conditions and crop requirements.

A farmer has 5 hectares of land and wants to allocate 60% for commercial crops like sugarcane and 40% for subsistence crops like rice. Calculate the area dedicated to each type of farming.

Solution:

Area for commercial crops:

\[ 60\% \times 5 = \frac{60}{100} \times 5 = 3 \text{ hectares} \]

Area for subsistence crops:
