Introduction
Reproduction is the biological process by which living organisms produce new individuals similar to themselves, ensuring the continuity of life on Earth. The nucleus of a cell contains DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid), the hereditary material that replicates to form new cells, introducing variations essential for evolution and survival.
Types of Reproduction
Asexual Reproduction: Involves a single parent producing offspring without the formation of gametes. The offspring are genetically identical to the parent. Common in lower organisms and some plants.
Sexual Reproduction: Involves two parents (male and female) producing gametes that fuse during fertilisation to form genetically varied offspring. Common in higher organisms.
Modes of Asexual Reproduction
- Fission: Division of a single organism into two or more individuals. Includes binary fission (e.g., Amoeba) and multiple fission (e.g., Plasmodium).
- Fragmentation: Body breaks into fragments, each growing into a new individual (e.g., Spirogyra).
- Regeneration: Ability to regrow lost parts and form new individuals (e.g., Planaria, Hydra).

Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants
Flowers are the reproductive organs of plants, consisting of sepals, petals, stamens (male), and carpels (female). Stamens produce pollen grains containing male gametes, while carpels contain ovules with female gametes.
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from anther to stigma, either self-pollination or cross-pollination. After pollination, a pollen tube grows to deliver male gametes to the ovule for fertilisation.
Fertilisation is the fusion of male and female gametes forming a zygote, which develops into an embryo. Post-fertilisation changes include seed and fruit formation.
Double Fertilisation is unique to flowering plants, involving fusion of one male nucleus with the egg to form an embryo and another with polar nuclei to form endosperm.
Reproduction in Human Beings
Humans reproduce sexually, with sexual maturity (puberty) marking the start of gamete production. Puberty involves physical changes in boys and girls.
Male Reproductive System: Includes testes (produce sperm and testosterone), vas deferens, urethra, penis, and accessory glands (seminal vesicles and prostate gland) that produce semen.
Female Reproductive System: Includes ovaries (produce eggs and hormones estrogen and progesterone), fallopian tubes (site of fertilisation), uterus (development of fetus), cervix, and vagina.
Placenta is a specialized tissue in the uterus that supplies oxygen and nutrients to the embryo and removes waste.
Menstruation is the shedding of the uterine lining when fertilisation does not occur.
Reproductive Health
Reproductive health involves maintaining a safe and satisfying reproductive life, including awareness of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HIV/AIDS.
Birth Control Methods or contraception prevent pregnancy through physical barriers (condoms, diaphragms), chemical methods (oral pills), intrauterine devices (IUCD), and surgical methods (vasectomy, tubectomy).
